EMILY MAGUIRE
Emily Maguire is the author of the novels Smoke in the Room (2009), The Gospel According to Luke (2006) and the international bestseller Taming the Beast (2004).
Emily has been twice highly commended for the Kathleen Mitchell Award for writers under 30 and was a finalist for the 2006 Dylan Thomas Prize and finalist for The Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Novelist Award for Smoke in the Room.
Her non-fiction book Princesses and Pornstars: Sex + Power + Identity (2008) is an examination of how the treatment of young women as fragile and in need of protection can be as objectifying and damaging to them as pornography and raunch culture. A Young Adult version of this book titled Your Skirt’s Too Short: Sex, Power, Choice was published in 2010.
Emily’s articles and essays on sex, religion, culture and literature have been published widely including in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Financial Review, The Observer and The Age. She has also contributed to various national radio and television programs, including ABC TVs The First Tuesday Book Club and Lateline, and Radio National’s Life Matters and The Book Show. In 2007, the Women’s Electoral Lobby awarded her the Edna Ryan Award (Media Category) for her writing about women’s issues.
Emily has served as Writer in Residence at the Djerassi Artists Program in Northern California (2009), as an Asialink Literature Resident in Vietnam (2008) and as a Tasmanian Writers’ Centre resident in Hobart (2006). She has an MA in literature and has worked as a mentor to young and emerging writers.
